Abstract:

“As consumers increasingly look to connect with companies online, lackluster Web experiences will damage many brands. But better functional design won’t solve the problem. Instead, Forrester recommends that companies master the three principles of a new approach that we call Emotional Experience Design (EED): Address customers’ real goals, develop a coherent personality, and engage a mix of senses. Firms can get started by focusing their research on uncovering users’ emotional needs, capturing emotional feedback in testing, and charting a course to Experience-Based Differentiation (EBD).”

Elizabeth Sanders on “co-creation through generative design thinking”. Sanders is a pioneer in the use of participatory research methods for the design of products, systems, services and spaces. She divides her time between teaching and practice. Here is a brief Abstract.

“Generative design thinking provides a design language for all of us, designers as well as non-designers, to use in provoking the imagination, stimulating ideation, stirring the emotions, discovering unmet needs and facilitating embodiments of future possibilities. Examples of this generative design language in action, from projects ranging from consumer product and service development to the planning and architecture of new healthcare campuses, will be shared.

Building on the emerging co-creative landscapes will require that we hold new attitudes and mindsets about the people formerly known as ‘consumers’ or ‘users’. It will also require that designers and researchers take on new roles in addressing the rigor, relevance and sustainability needed for human-centered designing. “

Recently I posted news about Gary Hayes Social media count that shows how active the Social Web & Mobile Industry is. Today i stumbled upon another very insightful comentary on the differences between key elements, Social Media, Digital Multi platform, Transmedia Storytelling plus collateral fallout, Marketing and why these are combining to create a Perfect Storm.

“A decade plus on, I am still beating this same drum but with dwindling air time, declining advertising revenues and funding, the eyeballs have shifted somewhere else finally - ’they’ are starting to listen even if they insist on bringing a lot of old business model baggage with them. But this post is about a perfect storm that is upon us. Ubiquitous multi platform technologies are now available to anyone to tell their stories across a sea of services. Social Media everywhere, anytime, democratised transmedia storytelling, the new product on the online shelves are people, individuals effectively marketing themselves, a brand of one. All of this competing against traditional media TV, Film, Radio & Papers. This post (albeit a bit preachy!) raises a question, that was going to be the title of this post – Collaborate or die?”

“Web and UX professionals battle everyday for the qualities that make up the timeless experience. Unfortunately concerns like: being first to market, shareholder expectations (profits), trying to one up the competition, and many other factors result in complex, and run-of-the-mill experiences.”

In reality the kinds of products, websites, and applications that survive and continue to be effective are those that that focus on the user experience. The digital world evolves continually, but we need to manage this by making sure we don’t leave the people who use our applications and websites in the dust.

Late summer Guardian began a project to tell the story of the internet using the internet. As a part of the project they asked all their readers to share their experiences of life online. Now they published an interactive documentary of stories told and videos, alongside with guardian’s exclusive research and interviews with key figures.

“The development was not just the work of Arpa-funded computer scientists. Bulletin boards, Usenet and simple chat functions were also parents of the internet today. The interviews include people who put the technology to new uses – Dave Hughes, who turned the bulletin board to political purposes in Colorado Springs in the early 1980s (Roger’s Bar), or Richard Bartle at Essex University who co-created multi-user online gaming (MUD) in the late 1970s.”

The Pew Internet & American Life Project has released a new survey with some stats on people who are using Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and so on to give status updates to others, or see what others updates. Hee are some highlights

Some 19% of internet users now say they use Twitter or another service to share updates about themselves, or to see updates about others.

The more devices someone owns, the more likely they are to use Twitter or another service to update their status. Fully 39% of internet users with four or more internet-connected devices (such as a laptop, cell phone, game console, or Kindle) use Twitter, compared to 28% of internet users with three devices, 19% of internet users with two devices, and 10% of internet users with one device.

The median age of a Twitter user is 31, which has remained stable over the past year. The median age for MySpace is now 26, down from 27 in May 2008, and the median age for LinkedIn is now 39, down from 40. Facebook, however, is graying a bit: the median age for this social network site is now 33, up from 26 in May 2008.
